Well, autumn is coming, and with it, pumpkin beers. Schlafly is a St. Louis brewery with some reach out here in the Northeast, at least courtesy of the excellent Oak Tree Buy-Rite liquor store, a local haven for beer enthusiasts.

So, let's get down to brass tacks. This is not a super strong beer, at 8.0% alcohol content, so there's no real alcohol note that could overpower the added spices. This is a fairly flavorful pumpkin ale, more reminiscent of pumpkin pie than Just Plain Pumpkin. There's a prominent note of cinnamon and nutmeg, with a smooth backing of pumpkin and cloves.

It's not the most pumpkin-y offering this season, and I think it's more of a dessert beer, but if you like pumpkin pie, and are on the fence about pumpkin beers, this is a good start.

3/5 stars, but keep in mind that I'm picky about my pumpkins.

Holy CRAP! You're alive!!

I've recently been a fan of pumpkin stuff, discovering pumpkin pie late in life. Last fall I picked up a pumpkin beer on a whim at a 7-11, though I can't recall its name (wasn't this one, that's for sure), but it was kind of meh. Though it totally made my day last week when I saw the pumpkin spice latte is back at Starbucks, mmm.

I look forward to your other pumpkin beer reviews.

This was actually a cross-post thanks to the client that I was using. I have no other place to post beer reviews without dealing with crazy beer snobs, so this was just easier.

Long story short, the brewiigii community has a bunch of my friends, one of whom makes his own beers (no pumpkins, though,) and he's posted a number of pumpkin reviews going back to 2008 or so.

For the short list, try Southern Tier's Pumking and Brooklyn Brewery's Post Road. If you want something with more alcohol to it, Weyerbacher's Imperial Pumpkin Ale will do the trick.

You think you could avoid beer snobs? Excuse me, I'll go poke [livejournal.com profile] heehaw_tng with a stick and alert him to this post. Mwa ha ha ha.

I've seen what he drinks. He's not a snob, he's just... particular.
